I know that I can rely on the team for support.
I will be voting for MIKE.

Message to all members of Islington UNISON from Jane Doolan

"Dear Member

I am writing  to ask you to support Mike Calvert's re-election to the post of Deputy Branch Secretary. I have worked with Mike over 10 years. He was Convenor of Social Services where he led on the discussions around the Mental Health Trust along with undertaking his role of Assistant Branch Secretary. For the past 5 years he has been the Deputy Branch Secretary. Mike is experienced, knowledgeable, hardworking and dedicated.

As I  previously stated during last years election. Mike's political acumen is very impressive but what is equally impressive is his generosity with his time and advice to members and stewards and his unswerving support of all our members including those working outside of the council.

Working full time as a lay official and given the breadth and scope of personal representation undertaken by Mike and other officers. He is qualified first hand to understand and empathise with what our members face everyday and this extends to our members working both inside and outside of LBI.

Mike understands as do the rest of the team that no one branch officer is more important than the branch or the membership. There is no place for ego and there is no I in team. There is a collective responsibility which binds all of us together.

Mike works as part of a team and this is very important to any union and to trade union unity. Our members expect us to work together and be supportive of the membership.  This includes being supportive of each other and putting the members first.

I urge you to put your X next to Mike Calverts name. I am also taking this opportunity to urge you to vote for Dwayne Coggins as Equalities officer.

Yours Sincerely

Jane Doolan"

First Hustings - A Comment By Diana James, in a Personal Capacity

Having Attended the first hustings at Highbury House today I think it is important to feedback my observations

Misleading claims from Andrew Berry?

Is a manager a frontline member of staff?

Today Andrew spoke of his work in frontline service.  He is a Homecare manager managing staff and it is they who are on the frontline not him. I noticed that he was keen to emphasise that he had made the decision to return to work 5 years ago yet he didn't talk about his various acting manager roles  at the Town Hall in Lela Kogbara's team either. He is stressing the importance of his work credentials so he should be honest in sharing that he is a manager and that he gave up the Deputy Branch Secretary position for career progression in management

An election candidate should be genuine and honest with the membership

As a member I don't want to be given personal 'spin' - that's what the voting public are sick of in our politicians. For me trust and confidence is key. The phrase 'pulling the wool over my eyes' springs to mind.

Low paid workers

Observing a recommendation in the form of an objection made by Andrew yesterday makes me question His commitment to low paid workers. Yesterday he was totally out of step with the general consensus at the Greater London Regional Council AGM. The jury's out for me on his judgement as I saw him put in an objection to carrying forward a motion to National Conference for policy debate on setting up sector pay-councils in the private sector, previously successful and then dismantled. The impression Andrew left for me when he put in an objection for the motion to go forward , he recommended to delegates   not to   vote 'for'  but  to *refer back' this motion to support improving low paid staff terms and conditions in the private sector, literally was out of step with every other delegate in the room who came from the Local Government, Health and Voluntary sectors as well as with the Regional Committee, which recommended to support this motion. Delegates from Camden  to Croydon , Lambeth to Waltham Forest voted collectively for the motion to go through. What Andrew conveyed from the podium was not a clear rationale. He asserted that sector pay councils had been debated before and needed further debate. So what's to debate? The debate of the debate?! Thank goodness the consensus in the room delivered the 'yes' vote progressing this motion intended to enable the setting up of negotiating mechanisms for disenfranchised low paid workers.

Diana

Message of Support from Theo Russell, Libraries Shop

"I would like to add my sponsorship for Mike Calvert for Deputy Branch Secretary Islington Unison. Mike is a dedicated trade union organiser and campaigner with many years’ experience, including working to keep council services in-house, for the best possible pay settlement and for the London Living Wage, in conditions which over the past 4 years have been extremely difficult and complex. I believe Mike has the skills to get the best possible results for Unison members in Islington, which can only be limited in the absence of an effective campaign at the national level by Unison and the other local government unions."

Message of Support from Sherry Allen, Adult Social Care HASS

"I have been an employee of the Council for 32 years .  I have always been a Unison member.

I am Asian Caribbean woman of the age of 51 who was born in Islington and on and during my time as a member I have, struggled at times with my disability and needed support.

Mike was there to support me with great empathy which enabled me to breathe again. I don't believe you need a qualification to communicate.   He is a people's person. He listened to me and directed me in the appropriate way. That's what we want as a Union Member."

Message of Support from Terry Luke, Retired Member

"As a retired member, I have known Michael for many years. During those years his encouragement and advice have proved of great value. Michael has shown concern for all our members (including retired ones) without regard to his own personal benefit.
Where on the few occasions disagreements  have arisen, they have been respected and not led to any bitterness or rancour on either side.
The lack of personal animosity and ambition and not having a hidden agenda are not only vital, but essential qualities for a branch officer at such a level.Members in all their diversity, are Michael's main priority and he recognises their interests come before his personal views. Retired members still have a stake in and committment to, this Branch.

Because of both, I would recommend to those that can affect this election, that a vote for Michael will ensure a continuity in terms of representation and negotiation. Such a vote will also mean that retired members continue to feel a welcome component of this branch.
At all levels, good representation and negotiation is a vital skill and this skill has been employed by Michael in his role as Deputy Branch Secretary over the last five years. A vote for Michael is an endorsement of his  abilities and expertise and it is also a vote for members as they will benefit when they most needto call on these qualities."

VOTE FOR MICHAEL CALVERT

Terry Luke is the former Retired members officer of this Branch, before that was a Libraries Shop Steward and a member of the Joint Consultative Committee.
Terry was also a caretaker and manual side steward.
Terry is also a disabled member of the Branch

Message of Support from Rosemary Plummer, Education Convenor

Why I am in full support of Mike Calvert for Deputy Branch Secretary.

"I have worked alongside Mike for many years in my opinion he is the only one for the post. Mike has empathy for the members. When members have issues at work they very often arrive at our office very distraught. Mike is very able to communicate with members in a very calm manner, whatever the issue.
Mike is an excellent negotiator I have personally witnessed Mike in meetings, negotiating on behalf of our members. Mike fully supports the branch,  I also have first hand experience of  seeing the amount of work Mike puts in to his position. Mike will always go that extra mile for the branch, members etc nothing is to much bother for Mike.
Mike is a peoples person these are a few reasons as to why I am voting for Mike Calvert.
I also support Dwayne Coggins."

Message of support from Diana James, Chief Executives Department and Assistant Branch Secretary

Shortly, you will be receiving your election papers from the Electoral Reform Society, so I am taking the opportunity in my personal capacity, as a rank and file member of UNISON, to take part in supporting the Mike Calvert Election Campaign 2014. Of course it is each individual member's democratic choice on how they exercise their vote. That said every election nominee has a campaigning strategy and supporters who voluntarily work on their behalf.
I am emailing you to say Mike is the candidate-of-choice for me as Deputy Branch Secretary and Labour Link Officer. My trust and confidence in him to continue to do a good job in his role as the incumbent DBS indicates for me that he will be effective as the L.L.O.  too. Working closely with Mike for 5 years now, particularly during  this time of Cuts, proves this to me. I have seen his skill at work in negotiating during meetings with the Leader of the Council, senior management across directorates, Head of Human Resources and Corporate addressing equalities issues impacting negatively on staff. He has consistently fought against job losses in these difficult times and with our Branch Secretary exposed the Council's lip service to re-deployment policy when the Branch discovered that there was still a high level of consultants and agency staff being used where current staff at risk could have been re-deployed. He put pressure on to closedown this disparity. When representing individual members, who often come to us in a distressed state, he is skilled in creating a supportive rapport. Mike believes in maintaining dialogue to win gains & concessions  for us. He is pragmatic, decisive,  democratically consults as and when required, if forced by the employer's negative actions to do so. Branch has a Recognition  Agreement with local employers delivering a Council service and if not individual representation rights apply. Pressurising the employer to act reasonably means from time to time using the dispute resolution mechanisms - this can be a fundamental  legal suspension of Management action to bring the employer back to the negotiating table, it doesn't mean strike action.
In my experience Mike has always been wholly committed  to exercising democracy within our Branch by using the consultative methods and practices endorsed by our national union, built on fairness, equality and belief in social justice. His style and approach to union business, whether raising issues and concerns which affect all of us as Islington Branch or in individual  representation, protects our interests. Mike has a valuable quality - and it is a genuine quality -to opt for the reasonable approach and this is also in situations when he is being asked challenging questions even from members. He is calm, reflective, never defensive and honest in his approach to union business.
Equalities Officer -candidate Dwayne Coggins. I am supporting Dwayne who has also consistently been an active member of the Black Members Self-Organised Group . (He is based in the resident facing service call centre in Housing at NBW.)
Best wishes
Diana

Message of Support from Eric Hill, Retired Member's Officer and Mike's Campaign Manager

I am writing in support of Mike Calvert who is standing for the post of Deputy Branch Secretary.
He is the current Deputy Branch Secretary and has held that position for five years. over those years he has built up a wealth of experience and knowledge which has stood the members in good stead over these years-both in individual cases and in Departmental and Branch disputes. I have witnessed Mike at work both in the Branch office and elsewhere and can vouch for his hard work on behalf of the membership. I also know other Branch Officers tap into his wealth of experience and knowledge on a regular basis when dealing with their own cases and/or disputes. It is accepted that his advice can always be relied upon and is therefore welcomed.

Another thing I would want to mention is the fact that we don't just have Branch Officers in the Branch Office, we have a team-in my view-in my view a well oiled machine-and Mike is an integral part of that team. It is therefore in the best interests of the membership to keep that team in place to deal with what I consider will be a difficult period of time ahead from a trade union point of view. This will give us the best chance of success in future disputes.

Mike does try and get to as many meetings as possible but given the nature and responsibilities of the post of Deputy Branch Secretary it is not possible for him to get to all the meetings he would wish to. he does however, prioritise what meetings it is in the best interests of the members for him to attend.
This can be a meeting with members either individually or as a group or a meeting with Management.
Whatever meeting it is, it is always with the members best interests in mind. Another important role is standing in for the Branch Secretary in her absence.
Mike and Jane have worked closely together over the last five years during which time he has successfully carried out that role. It is important therefore to maintain this continuity over this next period.

In conclusion it is in the members' best interest to return Mike as Deputy Branch Secretary. In doing so you will be voting for consistency, unity, responsibility, knowledge, experience and a person who is a team player and whom you can trust.

I was Mike's Campaign Manager last year and having witnessed on a daily basis his work for the members both individually and collectively, I am more than happy to be his Campaign manager again.

As Mike's Campaign Manager I just looked at his opponent's blog: I just need to point out that the header is very misleading. Mike's opponent is NOT the Deputy Branch Secretary.
